Crofton’s Dam Race volunteer committee recently voted to pledge a total of $50,000 to Nebraska Game & Parks Commission’s projected trail project at Lewis & Clark State Recreation Area.

Crofton’s Dam Race, a sprint triathlon featuring kayaking instead of swimming, is a growing attraction for Crofton. As the committee gathered in December for a season review, they also reflected on some big wins in the race’s seven year history.

“What started with about 60 local racers in 2018 has grown into over 350 racers representing 26 states,” says Heidi Marsh, race director. “That’s a big boost to our community.”

Originally the race committee, composed of 10 volunteers, hoped to pledge $5,000 per year toward a trail project at Lewis & Clark State Recreation Area just 12 miles from Crofton. With recent success and big time growth, the committee voted to put aside $50,000 total this past December.

“Crofton’s Dam Race is a valued partner to the Nebraska Game & Parks Commission and we’re motivated to bring this project to life” says Tyler Wulf, regional parks superintendent with Nebraska Game & Parks Commission and race committee member.

The projected trail will consist of a 5K recreational walking and biking path through Lewis & Clark State Recreation Area and the Weigand area including Weigand Marina. The race committee and Game & Parks Commission continue to develop the plan and funding for the project, but hope to see construction start in the next few years. As a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, Crofton’s Dam Race welcomes new partners who hope to bring this project to life.

“We continue to seek partners who share our mission of bringing recreational opportunities to our region,” says Marsh. “Thankfully, the race has introduced hundreds of people to our beautiful lake, parks and the community of Crofton.”

Registration is now open for Crofton’s Dam Race, scheduled for July 25, 2026. For more information, visit croftonsdamrace.com.
