The Crofton Board of Education met June 8 at Crofton High School at 6:30 p.m.
Main topics of discussion included asbestos abatement in the school and school lunch price changes.
The meeting opened up for public comments and Joe Jansen expressed his concerns with the asbestos issue. Jansen said that engineers and construction professionals should have foreseen the asbestos issue.
During discussion about the asbestos abatement Crofton Superintendent Mark Wragge, offered options on how to pay for portions of the process.
The options included, dipping into the general fund, or applying for funding through a program called QCPUF that has been set up specifically for asbestos removal in schools. More investigation is forthcoming by the school board and administration.
The asbestos discussion is covered more completely in another story in this week’s edition of the Journal.
In addition, Wragge talked about the installment of a water tank that will be installed on the northeast corner of the elementary school site to help solve water pressure issues for fire suppression. While the location of the water tank isn’t ideal, Wragge said that it was the least expensive option to solve the problem.
Wragge was approved as the Title I LEA Representative and elementary school principal Sarah Higgins is the District’s Title IX Coordinator.
Jami Stevens was approved as the district census taker.
Principal Johnnie Ostemeyer announced that the high school is fully staffed for the school year and that there were going to be changes in the handbook regarding various policies.
School lunch prices were discussed as the district has been taking losses within the lunch program for the last few years. The board raised lunch prices last year, and those losses drastically decreased. After discussion, they approved raising breakfast by $0.35, lunch by $0.45, and extra milk by $.05 for the upcoming school year. These raises will help balance the budget for the lunch program.
There will be a school board finance workshop on June 23 from 4:30-6:30 p.m.
The next school board meeting will be held July 13 at 6:30 p.m
