The Crofton City Council met for a regular city meeting on July 9 at the city auditorium.
July 2026 claims were all approved as presented. The bid by 3B Crushing to crush the concrete at the dump was tabled to wait for more information.
Holly Wortmann opened public comments about the Crofton One Act having 38 kids show interest in participating for the fall. She stated that due to the elementary being unavailable for use, they would need the auditorium to practice and possibly hold their dinner show and asked the council if that was possible. The council was fine with it and the city clerk would check on dates of availability.
There was a proposal for a bench between the Memorial Rock and shelter as the fire department wanted to put in a bench to honor a fireman. The Legion explained that due to the slope, dirt is getting on the stone every time it rains and wanted to dig up the area and move it to the L-shaped space.
The bench would be on the shelter sidewalk. Motion approved to put a bench there and rock or stone between shelter and Memorial Rock.
The council expressed dissatisfaction in the contract with the Knox County Sheriff’s office and passed and approved to let the contract expire and to look into advertising. According to the city minutes, “The agreement with the Sheriffs department from Knox County is expiring. No new agreement was sent from the sheriff’s office to the council for approval so the council decided to contact the city attorney and have a 30-day notice of cancellation drawn up ending the agreement.” The motion carried. Motion carried to list police chief ad on more online sites.
There was discussion about combining the city clerk and treasurer positions due to Chantel and Donna ending their times at the City. Someone has expressed interest in both positions. Mayor Ausdemore said they would like fulltime with both positions.
The current city clerk advised the position to be five days a week but have the office closed on Fridays so financials can be done uninterrupted.
Domestic animal permits were another topic of discussion. A motion was approved of the number of animals with the change of the number of animals added with permits being available at the city office. Those who don’t have one will receive a visit from the Code Enforcer.
Roger Protzman arrived and presented the bid documents for the water main. Motion approved to let out bids on water main project with date and time stipulations.
The new Planning and Zoning map was also discussed with 11 new zones being present. Jon Zavadil said Five Rule Rural Planning has been assisting the committee in the process. They are working to enlarge the map to display in the city office. Motion approved to have a parcel changed to Low Density Residential. The Mayor approved Joel Tramp to the Planning and Zoning committee. The committee is looking for more volunteers as well.
Motion carried to approve building permit 2616 for Meagan Friend deck.
The next regular city council meeting will be August 13.
