From Mike Hassler

The 13th Annual BIG Show went off without a hitch last Wednesday, March 15th.  The list of schools that attended the 13th Annual BIG Show were Wakefield, Pender, Bancroft-Rosalie, Crofton, Osmond, Dakota Valley, Homer, Ponca, Emerson-Hubbard, Allen, Wausa, Sergeant Bluff-Luton, Wynot, Stanton, Bloomfield, Scribner-Snyder, East Butler, Winside, and Dodge-Howells.
The day began with schools and students hanging artwork from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 with work being judged from 10:00 until 1:00 in the afternoon.  While the judging was going on attending art students participated in a group project where they created Roman Mosaics out of cereal boxes that depicted their school mascot in some shape or form.  At the end of the day, Wynot was recognized as the top mosaic project and was sent home with a special award.
A couple of Wakefield Artist received recognition at the conclusion of the day with special honors.  Kenna Decker received Honorable Mention Judge’s Best of Show for her foam Trojan armor titled “Man of Troy”.  Ashlyn Boeckenhauer also received Honorable Mention Judge’s Best of Show for her chalk pastel drawing titled “Round Up”.  Ashlyn was also recognized by visiting students as the “Outstanding School Artist” from Wakefield.
At the end of the day Mr. Hassler had this to say about the 13th annual BIG Show.  “This was probably our second biggest show we have ever hosted with 19 schools displaying artwork.  We had the opportunity to see a lot of new schools this year and we hope it continues to grow even bigger and better next year.  As always, we owe a huge thank you to Miller Building Supply.  Every year they go out of their way to loan us OSB Boards.  They drop them off and pick them up.  Without them there is no BIG Show.   Support like that is what makes this show so special.  I’m very proud of my art students as always.  Not only am I proud of the artwork they put on display, but I’m also proud of the way they stepped up to help pull off a pretty seamless show.  They understand what needs to be done, and I think they are also pretty proud of the show we put on for the Tri-State Area.   It’s a tradition I hope we can continue for years to come.”
Many examples of the work of area students exhibited at the BIG Show can be found on pages 4 and 5 of this edition of the Republican.
