Lady Trojans celebrating beating Ponca

The Wakefield Lady Trojans finished up the annual Wakefield Invitational Tournament over the weekend, piling five games into Saturday’s competition, and taking second place overall.
The 7-team round robin roster included Wakefield, Lyons-Decatur, Laurel-Concord-Coleridge, Ponca, Pierce, Lutheran High Northeast, and Hartington Cedar Catholic.
Wakefield’s girls played the other 6 teams, LDNE and Ponca on Thursday, Sept. 7, winning both – but had a loss in the first game on early-morning Saturday to the Pierce Bluejays; then bounced back against LCC and LHNE for two more 2-0 set wins and then lost to Cedar Catholic, giving the home team second-place overall.
With the four wins and two losses, the team advanced their record to 9-5 on this year’s season so far – and were set to play Howells-Dodge’s Jaguars on Tuesday, Sept. 11, and returning to a normal two-game week, they will play in Pender on September 14, and in Randolph on Tuesday, Sept. 19.

Vs. Lyons-Decatur Northeast
The Wakefield Lady Trojans defeated the LDNE Cougars in two sets, 25-10 and 25-15 to take their first win of the tournament.
Points were credited to Sierra Kaufman with seven points, and Jordan Metzler, Katie Borg and Daveigh Munter-McAfee with six each.
Munter-McAfee had six ace serves and six kills. Sierra Kaufman and Jordan Metzler each had two aces.
Digs were marked for Katie Borg with six; Jordan Metzler with three and Gracyn Keagle, Alli Brown, Sierra Kaufman, Boston Brown and Munter-McAfee each with one.
Vs. Ponca
Another 2-0 game was the team’s second effort against Ponca’s Indians, 25-16 and 25-22 for their second game of the first day of the tournament.
Against Ponca Isabelle Andrade had eight points to lead the team’s scoring.
Jordan Metzler marked four kills, seven points and one ace. Alli Brown had 10 kills and four aces with six points to her credit. Katie Borg had four points on her card and Sierra Kaufman and Daveigh Munter-McAfee had one each.
Borg gave most of the team’s digs with 10 on her record. Brown had seven, Metzler and Munter-McAfee had five each and Andrade, Kaufman and Brown were each credited with three.
Vs. Pierce
In the team’s first game on Saturday, Sept. 9, they fell to the Lady Jays of Pierce in two distinctly same sets – 25-17 and 25-17.
Jordan Metzler had just four points and led the team’s category with one Ace. Katie Borg had an ace and two points on her sheet.
Munter-McAfee knocked down six kills, Alli Brown had five, Sierra Kaufman had four and a few other Trojans had one.
Vs. LCC
A closer game, but still in the Lady Trojans’ favor, the girls won their second game on Saturday against Laurel’s Bears, 25-20 and 27-25.
Points went to Sierra Kaufman and Jordan Metzler with six each. Daveigh Munter-McAfee had three points, Katie Borg and Alli Brown each marked two and Isabelle Andrade had one.
Kills went to Daveigh Munter-McAfee, who had eight. Alli Brown had seven, Kaufman had five, Brown had four and Keagle had three.
Katie Borg posted 14 digs for her team, Daveigh Munter-McAfee had nine, Jordan Metzler had five, Bella Andrade had four and Alli Brown had three.
Vs. LHNE
Another 2-0 win helped build momentum for the Lady Trojans, as they took two sets from the Lutheran High Northeast Eagles 25-12 and 25-17.
Sierra Kaufman and Jordan Metzler led the team’s points with six each. Alli Brown had five, Daveigh Munter-McAfee had two, as did Katie Borg and Isabelle Andrade had one.
Digs were put up by Munter-McAfee with 10 total, Borg had 10, Metzler had seven, Brown had five and Kaufman and Keagle each had one.
Vs. HCC
In the team’s final game of the tournament the Lady Trojans put up a close fight to Hartington’s Cedar Catholic team, but fell just short in the first set, 26-24, and close in the second as well, 25-20.
The Lady Trojans were led in points by Isabelle Andrade with six points and two aces. Katie Borg, Jordan Metzler and Daveigh Munter-McAfee each had three points. Alli Brown and Ashlyn Riewer each had one point.
Kills were led by Alli Brown with seven, Daveigh Munter-McAfee had six, and Sierra Kaufman and Jordan Metzler each had four. Gracyn Keagle had one.
Katie Borg had nine digs to lead the team’s defense. Metzler marked five, Munter-McAfee had four, Andrade had three and Keagle, Brown and Kaufman each had one.
