The Wakefield Lady Trojans basketball team took home the title of “Shootout on the Elkhorn” Holiday Tournament Champions after wins on Thursday and Friday, Dec. 28 and 29.
With two wins against Santee and Wisner-Pilger, the Lady Trojans improved their win streak to three games as the team now sits at a 5-5 record and has a short break before resuming regular season play against Woodbury Central (IA) on Thursday, Jan. 4.
In their most recent contest, the tournament championship game against the Wisner-Pilger Lady Gators, the Trojans had to fight hard to come out on top in a close game.
The Trojans came out hot in the first quarter, specifically Daveigh Munter-McAfee, who had ten of the teams 13 points in the quarter.
In the second and third quarters, the team struggled desperately on the offensive end, only scoring 12 combined points in those two quarters to put them in a tight spot heading into the fourth.
Luckily for Trojans fans, Munter-McAfee got hot again, this time with the help of Jordan Metzler. The two combined for 13 of the teams’ 16 fourth-quarter points to propel them to a tough 41-35 victory over the Lady Gators.
Munter-McAfee led the way for the Lady Trojans with 18 points, followed by Metzler with 11, Katie Borg with six, Alli Brown with four, and Ashlyn Riewer with two to round out the team’s scoring.
The day prior to their championship victory, the ladies took on the Santee Lady Warriors, and had a little better luck offensively.
The Lady Trojans got out to a solid start, holding the Warriors to just five points in the first quarter on their way to a 23-18 lead at the half.
The Lady Warriors refused to quit, despite being down. After halftime, Santee came out with all they had, scoring 18 points on the Lady Trojans in an effort to make a comeback, but Metzler and Munter-McAffee had different plans.
The duo combined for 16 of the teams’ 21 points in the third quarter, maintaining the Lady Trojans lead and giving them momentum to finish out the game with a strong fourth quarter to secure a 59-40 win and their spot in the championship the next night, which they would go on to win.
“This was your typical Christmas vacation game,” said Head Coach of the Lady Trojans Cory Brown. “At times it was a little ugly, but it was good enough to get the win. I’m proud of the girls.”
This time it was Metzler outshining McAfee with 27 points, McAfee followed closely behind with an 18-point performance, Montse Avila added six of her own, Borg followed with five, Alli Brown had two and Boston Brown had one to round it out. Munter-McAfee also corralled a team-leading 14 rebounds to end the night with a double-double.
