Memorial Day program held

After unfortunately having to cancel the Memorial Day program in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic the men and ladies of Anton Bokemper Legion Post 81 remembered all veterans with a ceremony held at the Wakefield Cemetery May 31.
"It was a beautiful day and we had a great crowd," said Post 81 Commander Gary Salmon. "It was nice to see all of the people out to support the veterans."
Post 81 presented the Colors around 2:00 p.m. and the program began with Jim Clark leading the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance.  Afterward Pastor Willie Bertrand of St. John’s Lutheran Church gave the invocation.
Pastor Charity Potter of the Wakefield Presbyterian Church was the speaker this year.
“But it's all of our responsibilities as Americans, to do our best.  To try and be the kind of Americans, that are worth the sacrifice, that are worth the effort, that are worth the energy.” said Pastor Potter.  “But we can’t do that if we can’t come together as one body.”
Jim Clark, Jon Geiser, and Gary Salmon then read out the names of all the military veterans laid to rest in the Cemetery.
After the reading of the names followed a rifle salute from members of Legion Post 81 and the playing of “Taps.”
Following the conclusion of the ceremony a gathering was held courtesy the ladies of the Auxiliary at the Legion Hall downtown.
"We had a good crowd after the ceremony," Salmon said. "It's nice to get back to somewhat normal - and especially today."
