The Flag Raising Ceremony at Wakefield Community Schools is set to kickoff at 8:15 a.m. on Thursday, August 19 at the main entrance of the school.

The Wakefield American Legion will be on hand to welcome the new students, welcome the existing students and let the students know they are still there watching over them.

The ceremony will begin at 8:15 a.m. with a welcome for Wakefield Community Schools superintendent, Matt Farup.

Pastor Patti Meyer will be the guest speaker before Jim Litchfield describes the History of the Flag Raising.

That history is in excess of 60 years.

Farup will then introduce the staff in its entirety.

The actual Fla Raising will be performed by the Wakefield Troop 172 Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts.

The National Anthem will be performed by the Trojan Band under the direction of Esly Ovando.

Troop 172 will then lead the attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance.

The Wakefield VFW and American Legion will be in charge of the Color Guard ceremony, which includes a 21-gun salute.

Farup will take the podium again to hand out some announcements before the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars retire the Colors.

From there, the Wakefield Community Schools sixth graders will ring the bell near the main entry to signify the beginning of the 2021-2022 school year.

"This has been a tradition here for over 60 years and a good one," Wakefield superintendent Matt Farup said. Anytime you can have the Legion guys interact with our kids it's great - the Legion guys have so much to share with the younger kids and everyone."
