Wakefield held its annual Gatorade/Sports Drink scrimmage last week at Eaton Field in Graves Park.

Coach Mike Hassler called the scrimmage a success.

Any time that you come out of the Gatorade Scrimmage injury free that is a good day," he said.  "I was pleased with the way the kids executed for this early in the season, obviously we are a long way from where we want to be.

Although the coach was somewhat happy with his team's performance - he knows improvement is what leads to the numbers at the end of the season.

"We definitely got a list of things to work on and iron out for game week," Hassler said. "The boys are definitely ready to get on the field."

On the field means a trip to Beemer to take on West Point Guardian Angels Central Catholic - a team the Trojans and Hassler knows very well.

"Every year when you mention the top programs in Northeast Nebraska, GACC's name is gonna get tossed out there on the table," Hassler said. "I don't know why this year should be any different.  They have athletes every year."

Wakefield has defeated the Bluejays for the past three seasons.

Last year in Wakefield, 36-22, 50-36 in 2019 and 38-22 back in 2018 handing GACC its lone loss in the regular season.

"Their (GACC) QB is back and their Running back gained a lot of valuable playing time last year," Hassler said.  "It looks like they will have some decent size up front as well.  This game is a dog fight every year."

Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. in Beemer.

"We are excited to step on the field and begin our journey," Hassler said. "We will definitely know a lot more about ourselves after Friday night."
