The Wakefield Trojan boys’ basketball team won a road game against Ponca on January 11, and sent Lawton-Bronson home with a loss when the team visited Wakefield on Thursday, Jan. 13.
In the Lawton-Bronson came, the Trojans opened the first quarter with a nine-point unanswered lead, 13-4; and added another 12 points to that lead in the second. The Trojans went into the halftime break with a big deal, 36-15, and added another eight in the third, 20-12. The fourth quarter also fell to the Wakefield team, 21-7, adding up to the final 77-34 in favor of the Trojans.
The home team was able to score big off a 68 percent field goal percentage, draining 15 of their 30 three-point goals to outscore the L-B team early on.
Armando Villa scored 23 of the Wakefield team’s points off nine two-point goals and three three-pointers. Cade Johnson had 16 points, Eliseo Sarmiento had 15, Hunter Schultz marked 12, Logan Bokemper put up three and Johnathan Birkley, David Beltran, Anthony Valenzuela and Matt Ladely each had two.
Schultz led the team’s defense with 10 rebounds credited to his card, and two assists. Johnson had eight rebounds, seven assists and four steals. Villa had four rebounds, Birkley and Bokemper each had three, Juan Paredes had two and Ladely and Sarmiento each had one.
The Trojans were scheduled to travel to Bancroft-Rosalie-Lyons-Decatur on January 18, will host Tri-County on Friday, Jan. 21 and are scheduled to play at Laurel on January 27.
Vs. Ponca
The Wakefield Trojans got out to an early 28-16 start against Ponca’s Indians, and held onto that lead through the final buzzer to take a win 57-40 on January 11.
The Trojans put 13 points on the board in the first quarter, compared to the Indians’ 5; and went 15-11 against the home team to lead 28-16 into the halftime break. The Trojans led both the third and fourth quarters as well, 14-13 and 15-11, to take the 57-40 win.
Continued consistent scoring puts the Trojans team out on top – according to the statistics printouts – the team is just simply making more baskets than their opposition – pushing 60 percent shots-made, compared to 30-40 percent by their last few rivals.
Leading the team’s scoring this week was Cade Johnson with 15 points from five two point goals, one three-pointer and four free throws. A close second was Eliseo Sarmiento who had five two point goals, three three-pointers and one free throw. Armanda Villa had 10 points, Hunter Schultz had six, Johnathan Birkley and Logan Bokemper each had five and Ryan Anderson added two.
Villa and Johnson both posted eight rebounds to lead the team’s defensive stats. Schultz had six, Sarmiento marked five and Birkley, Bokemper and Anderson all had at least one. Schultz had three steals and Johnson and Bokemper each had one.
