Jordan Metzler

The Wakefield Trojans girls basketball team took a win over visiting Lawton-Bronson on January 13, coming off a close loss to the Ponca Indians team on the road on January 11.

“Aishah Valenzuela led the way against Lawton with a career high 24 points,” said Coach Kent Emswiler, “Great team effort in our 25-point victory.”
To nab those 25 points, the Lady Trojans outscored the L-B team in the first 20-12, and led into the halftime break, 33-22, before outscoring to the L-B team 12-7 in the third and 17-8 in the fourth for the 62-37 win at home.
As Coach Emswiler pointed out, Aishah Valenzuela topped the Trojans scoring list with 24 points from eight made two-point goals, two three-pointers and a perfect 6/6 from the free throw line.
Jordan Metzler put up 14 points, Makenna Decker had eight, Alex Arenas, Destiny Helzer and Daveigh Munter-McAfee each had five points and Alli Brown posted one.
Munter-McAfee led the team’s rebounds with 13 from three offensive and 10 defensive boards. Decker had six rebounds, Arenas and Metzler had five each, Valenzuela had three and Rachael Nuernberger had one.
The Lady Trojans were scheduled to play at Bancroft-Rosalie-Lyons-Decatur on Tuesday, Jan. 18, will host Tri-County Northeast on Friday, Jan. 21 and will travel to Homer on Jan. 24 and Laurel on Jan. 27.

Vs. Ponca
The Ponca Indians were able to sneak away with a 10-point win over the Wakefield Lady Trojans when the local girls traveled north last week for a contest.
The Lady Trojans had a slow first quarter, outscored 16-6, but evened up the score by halftime trailing, 23-20. The third quarter was even with both teams scoring 12 points, but Ponca was able to put in seven unanswered points and keep the win just out of reach for the Lady Trojans, 53-43.
Three Wakefield players were in double-digits for scoring – Jordan Metzler had 13 points and Alex Arenas and Aishah Valenzuela both had 11 points. Metzler scored on four three-point goals and one free throw.
Daveigh Munter-McAfeee had seven rebounds and one steal to lead the team’s defense. Alex Arenas had six rebounds, five assists and two steals; Makenna Decker had four, Jordan Metzler had two and Aishah Valenzuela had one.
