The Wakefield Lady Trojan basketball team played in three games since last reporting – taking a win over Omaha Nation and two wins against Laurel-Concord-Coleridge’s Lady Bears.
With the three wins, the Lady Trojans moved to 14-5 on the 2021-22 season with just three games left to play in the regular season, including the Conference tournament.
On Saturday, Jan. 29, the Lady Trojans played against LCC’s Lady Bears for the second time in a week, this time in the Lewis Division of the Conference tournament.
The Lady Trojans trailed in the first quarter against the Lady Bears at the Conference tournament, 16-11, but had eight unanswered points in the second quarter to regain the lead, 19-16 at the halftime break. Six more were added to the Trojan scoreboard in the third, and another two in the fourth gave the Lady Trojans the 51-40 win in the first round of the tournament.
Three Lady Trojans put up double-digit scores against the Bears, led by Alex Arenas this game with 18 points. Aishah Valenzuela had 13 points, Jordan Metzler posted 12, Makenna Decker had six and Destiny Helzer rounded out the team’s offense with two points.
The Lady Trojans were scheduled to play the Wynot Blue Devils on Tuesday, Feb. 1 in the second round of the tournament, and with a 46-38 win over the Wynot team, the Lady Trojans will play at Wayne State College on Monday, Feb. 7 Ponca’s Indians.

Vs. Laurel-Concord-Coleridge
The Lady Trojan girls basketball team won over LCC’s Lady Bears in a regular season contest on January 27, 62-37 after the fourth quarter buzzer.
The teams traded quarters – the first going to the Lady Trojans 14-4, and the second to the Lady Bears, 14-8 – to tip the game just in favor of Wakefield, 22-18, at the halftime break. In the third quarter, the Lady Trojans opened the lead by another seven (19-12) and by 14 in the fourth (21-7) to tie up the 62-37 win.
Jordan Metzler again had a big game for her team, marking 22 points. Alex Arenas scored 16, Aishah Valenzuela and Destiny Helzer each had eight points and Daveigh Munter-McAfee had four.

Vs. Omaha Nation
On Tuesday, Jan. 25 the Lady Trojans faced off against the Omaha Nation girls, and won over the home team on their courts, 70-35.
The Lady Trojans started out strong with a five-point lead in the first, and added a big 18 to their total in the second quarter to lead the game, 41-18 in the halftime break. Another 17 in the third (27-10) and after a 7-2 fourth quarter in favor of the Nation girls, the Wakefield team won out 70-35.
Scoring for the Lady Trojans were Jordan Metzler with a big 24 points, and Destiny Helzer with 20 to lead the team’s offense. Metzler had just three two-point goals, but drained six three-point goals and was a perfect 2-2 from the free throw line. Helzer had seven two-point goals, netted four three-point goals, and was 3 of 8 from the free throw line for her total.
Alex Arenas had seven points, Aishah Valenzuela and Katie Borg both had six points, Makenna Decker marked five and Daveigh Munter-McAfee had two.
Defensively the Lady Trojans were led by Arenas, who had nine rebounds, six assist and seven steals for the team. Munter-McAfee had five rebounds and three steals, Makenna Decker and Destiny Helzer each had four, Aishah Valenzuela, Katie Borg, Bella Andrade and Jordan Metzler each had two, and Alli Brown had one.
