The Wakefield Lady Trojans played host for a seven-team round robin tournament last weekend, pulling in a third-place overall finish in the event.
The tournament included Wakefield, Hartington Cedar Catholic, Laurel-Concord-Coleridge, Ponca, Pierce, Lutheran High Northeast and Lyons-Decatur.
With games that started on Thursday, Sept. 8 and continued on Saturday, Sept. 10 – the Lady Trojans got six games in on a pretty tight schedule, splitting things right down the middle with three wins and three losses.
“The Wakefield Lady Trojans saw a lot of great competition over the past weekend at their home tournament, where they went 3-3 and ended up third out of seven teams,” said Coach Brittany Eisemann, “Saturday was a busy day for us, we had four games - three of which were back to back. We had a starter go down early in the morning on Saturday and Laken Rahn stepped in and filled those shoes without hesitation. The girls battled all day on Saturday and even though we did lose two of our matches (Pierce and Ponca), we are all proud of the effort that heart that was seen. Our defense helped us win against both LCC and LHNE. The past couple of games we seemed to be missing some of our get up and go, but we finally clicked as a team and got the job done. They were all exciting games to be a part of this weekend!”
Wakefield’s girls took third-place overall, with a tie-breaker format used to separate the teams. Pierce went 6-0 on the tournament to take first-place; runner-up was Cedar Catholic (5-1).
The Lady Trojans picked up wins against Lyons-Decatur Northeast, Laurel-Concord-Coleridge and Lutheran High Northeast, and lost games to Hartington Cedar Catholic, Pierce and Ponca.
Each game was played on a best of three – and with all the wins, the Lady Trojans went 2-0, and had two losses at 0-2, except Ponca, which pushed to the third game, 1-2.
The Lady Trojans were scheduled to play Tuesday, Sept. 13 against Howells-Dodge on the road, and will host Pender on Thursday, Sept. 15 on the home court.
