The Wakefield Trojan volleyball team took part in the Lewis & Clark Conference tournament over the weekend, ending up in second place with two game wins and one loss.
“We definitely had opportunities to pull away in each set against Ponca, but they kept coming back at us,” said Coach Brittany Eisenmann. “We would fight our way back into the set, only to fall back with errors. While our defense was on point, we struggled to find the floor on their side. It was such a bittersweet ending to the conference tournament, while we wish it would’ve ended differently, we have to be proud of where we ended up. Second place is a huge accomplishment and we are so proud of the girls. This loss stings, but we realize that we still have work to get done with subdistricts coming up next week.”
Wakefield has been assigned to the Class C2-4 Subdistrict for games scheduled for October 24-25 with Homer, Omaha Nation, Pender and Wakefield. Times and locations were not yet announced at press time.
The Lady Trojans started off with a win over Hartington-Newcastle, 2-0 sets; took a game 3-0 from Plainview’s Lady Pirates, and went 1-3 to the Ponca Lady indians on Tuesday evening at home.
In the conference final on Tuesday evening, the Lady Trojans took on Ponca in four sets, losing the first 25-21, and the second, 25-19, but bouncing back in the third, 25-22, and falling in the fourth, 25-22, to give the Lady Indians the title this year.
The prior games, to Plainview the Lady Trojans took a sweep - 3 sets to 0 on a 25-19, 25-19 and 25-16 run over the Pirates.
“Plainview was a slower paced game, and we were able to control the match all three sets. In this game, senior Alex Arenas punched her 1,000th dig,” said Coach Brittany Eisenmann. “We are so proud of her hard work and dedication to our team.”
In the Lady Trojans’ first game against the Wildcats, the Wakefield girls made short work of the rival team, winning two sets to zero - 25-21 and 26-24.Conference Comments
“We went back and forth with Hartington-Newcastle the first match of the night. We started off slow but starting warming up and playing our game by the end. The second set was much closer but we were able to pull away with a 26-24 win,” said Coach Eisenmann.
The Lady Trojans will have two more games in the regular season, prior to the Sub-District tournament, with a triangular at Winnebago with Homer and Winnebago as opponents, on October 20.
