The Wakefield Trojan junior high wrestling team started their season on the mats with an invitational at Wayne on Saturday, Nov. 5, joining 12 other teams for a packed-house event.
Wakefield’s wrestlers, 10 all told, three eighth-graders and seven seventh-graders, with a number of young ladies joining the team this year, scored 15 total team points for the Trojans.
The meet was won by Norfolk Junior High with 233 team points, Schuyler was second with 225, Battle Creek third with 200.5, Pierce and Summerland rounding out the top five. Other teams at the invite were Plainview, Boone Central/Newman Grove, Randolph, Ponca, Wayne, Winside and Laurel-Concord-Coleridge.
“The Wayne meet was a decent start to the season,” said Coach Luke Walsh. “We've got a young team without a lot of experience so we're looking forward to see how far they'll progress.”
Individual results for the Trojan teammates were:
116B: Tucker Raveling: lost to Leseberg of Wayne by pin; won with a bye; lost 4-2 to Parsons of Pierce.
122A: Landon Newton lost by pin to Hernandez of Schuyler and lost by pin to Mast of Summerland.
132A: Oliver Sievers lost by pin to Edwards of Winside and lost by pin to Kreikemier of Battle Creek.
145A: Landon Ryion lost 3-0 to Larson of Norfolk; won by pin over Ayala of Schuyler; pinned Thompson of Norfolk and won 7-0 over Eckert of Battle Creek. Ryion won third-place.
155B: Bryan Godinez lost by pin to Fowlkes of BC/NG; pinned Borja of Schuyler; and pinned Daily of Norfolk. Godinez took second-place.
165A: Ezequiel Ramirez lost by pin to Frahm of Plainview; lost by pin to Hoffman of Norfolk and lost by pin to Rosas of Schuyler. Ramirez won fourth-place.
83G: Mirella Ruvalcaba won by decision 1-2 over Baker of Norfolk; lost by fall to Catalan of Schuyler 2-1; lost by fall to Fehringer of Boone Central 3-1.
135G: Angie Miranda won with a bye; lost 4-1 to Long of Norfolk and lost by medical forfeit to Morales of Schuyler.
155G: Jazmynn Scott lost by pin to Sixtos of Norfolk and lost by pin to Naeve of Winside.
185G: Natalee Nelson lost 11-2 to Nilson of Summerland; won with a bye; and lost by pin to Zautke of Norfolk.
The junior high squad travels to Winside on Friday, November 11th with matches beginning at 2 p.m.  Then on Monday, November 14th they travel to the Randolph Invite  , with the invite starting at 4 p.m.
