The Wakefield Lady Trojans girls’ basketball team traveled to the “Swamp” at Wisner-Pilger to play in the W-P Holiday Tournament, winning over the host team, and falling to Ponca in the second game of the tournament.
“I was very proud of the heart the girls played with in both games,” said Coach Cory Brown. “We started off well, had the lead against a top five team in Class C-2. The second half we got into some foul trouble and fatigue set in. Their pressure defense pushed us away from the hoop and took us out of our game a bit.”
Against Ponca, the Lady Trojans took a hard loss to the Lady Indians, falling 66-28 after four quarters of play. The Wakefield girls struggled to stop the Ponca offense, after a good opening first quarter that turned in the second to favor the Lady Indians, 30-18 at the halftime break.
The Lady Trojans put up just eight in the third quarter and two in the fourth, without stopping Ponca’s 13 point third period and 23-point fourth quarter. At the final buzzer the Wakefield girls notched the loss.
Scoring for the Lady Trojans was Alex Arenas with 13 points off four two-point goals, one three, and two of six from the penalty line. Jordan Metzler had 11 points off one three-pointer and three two-point buckets and two of three from the line. Only two other Lady Trojans put down points for the game, Katie Borg with three points, and Ashlyn Riewer with one.
In the team’s first game, against Wisner-Pilger, the girls fared a bit better to start out the tournament with a 54-47 win over the host Gators.
“We started off slow against a good Gators team,” said Brown. “They were tall, quick and athletic. Their 1-3-1 gave us troubles until our defense created some offense. Down by 10 with 3:30 to go in the third the girls dug deep and took control by the mid-fourth.”
Alex Arenas posted a huge 30-point game off eight field goals, two three-pointers and she went eight of 10 from the free throw line, to lead the team’s offense. Daveigh Munter-McAfee had nine points, Jordan Metzler and MaKenna Decker each ahd six points, and Katie Borg posted three.
The Lady Trojans were scheduled for a game against Lutheran High Northeast on Tuesday that was snowed out; and they’ll play on the road for the next four games, starting with Thursday, Jan. 5 against Woodbury Central, then Jan. 6 against Walthill, and Tuesday, Jan. 10 against Ponca.
